Scott Driving System (DSI)
Independent driving experience - proven reliable preformance.

The Scott System is a simple and reliable driving system developed to give quadraplegics driving independance. The entire system is designed to provide a safe and comfortable driving experience.
The principals of Driving Systems Incorporated have been producing the Scott System since 1973. The system has constantly been improved upon, but the basic concept has remained: To provide the most reliable driving platform possible. We have over 600 clients some of whom have driven their vans over 300,000 miles.
The basic vehicle is a Ford E-250 Econoline Window Van. A series of modifications are added to the basic automobile to enable a severely disabled person to independently enter the vehicle, drive to his or her destination, and leave while remaining in his powered wheel chair. All of these operations are accomplished without aid from others.
Wheel or Tri-Pin Driving
A single lever system combines all driving functions.
Forward movement of the control column actuates the accelerator. Backward motion applies the brakes. Rotation of the mini-wheel or tri-pin post steers the vehicle. A maximum force of six ounces is required for control. When finger dexterity is present, the mini-wheel is prefered. For spinal cord injury where finger or wrist motion may not be available, the tri-pin post is used for either the right or left hand.

Steering is accomplished through a closed loop hydraulic system. Primary hydraulic power is provided by the engine. An automatic emergency back-up system is provided which is activated in the event of engine failure or any failure of the primary system. The emergency system can also be activated manually.
Example Van - lift and drivers side area

An electrical system is provided which brings all of the vehicle's electrical controls to a panel of illuminated light-contact push buttons.
Any eight of the controls can be duplicated in the center of the mini-wheel for one handed operation. Other controls may be duplicated for the convenience of the driver.
At the top is the radio control.
Then the buttons which control everything from lift to windows, to windshield wipers, headlights, horn, turn signals, ignititon.
The bottom panel controls the heat and a/c.
This system consists of electrically powered doors and a wheel chair lift, which will lift the driver and wheel chair from ground level to the interior level of the vehicle. Once in the vehicle, controls permit the folding of the lift and closing the entry doors. Reversing the operation permits the driver to leave the vehicle at his/her destination. Outside controls are provided to close and open the entry system. An optional remote radio control for the doors and lift is available.
